About
Why did I develop TrackMyTotes?
Because opening 12 totes to find one thing is insane!
If you’ve ever stood in your garage staring at a wall of plastic totes thinking…
“I know that thing is in here somewhere…”
…then you already understand why TrackMyTotes exists.
For years I had boxes everywhere.
Garage.
Attic.
Basement.
Shed.
If there was a place in my house that could hold a tote, there was probably one sitting there. Inside those totes were things like:
• holiday decorations
• pots and pans
• my wife’s impressive collection of serving trays
• my slightly ridiculous collection of firearm parts
• tools I only use every once in a while
• kids’ school projects from years ago
• photo albums
• and a bunch of other stuff I knew I owned but couldn’t find
At one point I had at least 70 totes scattered around.
And every time I needed something, the process looked like this:
- Open tote.
- Dig around.
- Nope.
- Next tote.
- Repeat.
Eventually you find the thing you were looking for… in the 11th tote you opened.
The “Tape and Marker” Phase
Like most people, I tried the obvious solution first. Masking tape and a marker. Problem solved, right? Not exactly. My handwriting is terrible. Half the time I couldn’t even read what I wrote. And the labels I could read usually said something extremely helpful like:
“Christmas stuff.”
Which still meant opening the tote. So that didn’t really fix anything.
I Tried Another Product Too
Eventually I found another product that claimed to solve the problem. It seemed promising… until I started using it. A few issues showed up pretty quickly:
You had to buy their labels.
If a label fell off, you couldn’t just reprint it. You had to buy more of their labels. And those labels were not cheap. Even worse, the contents of the tote weren’t printed on the label, which meant the label didn’t really tell you much anyway.
And the software?
Hard to navigate.
Hard to understand.
And if you needed help… well… good luck.
After fighting with it for a while I thought: “There has to be a simpler way to do this.”
And TrackMyTotes was born!
TrackMyTotes started as a solution to my own problem.
I wanted something simple. Something where I could:
• Track what was inside each tote
• Search for something and instantly see which box it’s in
• Print labels if I wanted
• Or just print on regular paper and tape it on the box
No proprietary labels. No expensive supplies. No complicated system.
Just a way to finally know what’s in your boxes without opening every single one.
Use Whatever Labels You Want
One thing I cared about a lot when building this was flexibility. You can:
• print QR code labels
• use regular printer paper
• use label sheets
• or even just write the tote ID on the box
TrackMyTotes doesn’t lock you into buying special labels or supplies. Use whatever works for you.
Who This Is For?
Honestly, TrackMyTotes is for anyone who has a lot of stuff in storage. That might be:
• homeowners with garages full of bins
• attic or basement storage
• people with storage units
• sheds and workshops
• collectors
• small business inventory
• families saving kids’ projects and memories
• people who move a lot
Basically anyone who has ever said: “I know I have that somewhere… I just don’t know where.”
Why I Keep Improving It
TrackMyTotes isn’t some giant corporate software product built in a boardroom. It’s something I built because I needed it myself. And I still use it. That means whenever I run into something that could be better, I improve it.
But the best ideas don’t always come from me. They come from people actually using the product.
If something could work better… if there’s a feature that would make organizing your totes easier… or if you have an idea that would save time, I want to hear about it. A lot of improvements in TrackMyTotes come directly from user feedback.
So if you’ve got a suggestion, send it our way email us or use our contact us page.. There’s a good chance it could make its way into a future update.
The Goal Is Simple
The goal of TrackMyTotes is simple. Help you find your stuff without digging through every box you own.|
If it saves you from opening six totes just to find one thing, then it’s doing exactly what it was built to do.
